This book narrates the history of the British presence in Peru during the first century of republican life. The imprint of these men and women who came from a rainy archipelago thousands of kilometres away was initially marked by the dream of freedom and later transitioned into tasks that became fundamental for a country that was being formed, such as the development of infrastructure, educational institutions, industries, factories, and trade. For this reason, the main purpose of this book is to bring back to life the numerous records of this presence in the creation of wealth, the observations of travellers, the binational exchanges, and the settling down of people in different Peruvian cities. In this respect, it aims to find certain keys to this presence using archives, documents, publications, and oral accounts, as well as pictorial and photographic evidence, mainly unpublished material.
